Premier League MW 1
Crystal Palace 0 vs. 2 Arsenal
It all kicked off on Friday night as Crystal Palace welcomed Arsenal to Selhurst Park. Arsenal dominated the first half and took a lead via Gabriel Martinelli in the 20th minute. Palace gave it their all for much of the second half and Ramsdale had to make some stunning saves to keep the score level. Guehi scored an own goal in the 85th minute to seal the win for Arteta and company. Palace sit 17th in the league with the loss while Arsenal sit third with the win. A good start to the season for the away team.
Fulham 2 vs. 2 Liverpool
Liverpool were expected to steamroll Fulham but the home team had plans to counter it. Marco Silva’s team pressed the Reds and took the game to Klopp and co and caught them off guard. Mitrovic scored the first goal in the 32nd minute, a towering header over Trent. Nunez came off the bench in the second half to score and bring Liverpool back into the game. Van Dijk then conceded a penalty by bringing Mitrovic down and he made it 2-1 for Fulham in the 72nd minute. Salah equalised for Liverpool in the 80th minute and the points were shared. Fulham sit 10th in the table while Liverpool sit 12th in the table. Liverpool are already behind in the title race.
Bournemouth 2 vs. 0 Aston Villa
Jefferson Lerma scored in the second minute to give Bournemouth the lead and Kieffer Moore made it two for Bournemouth in the 80th minute. The Cherries gained three massive points from the first game back in the Premier League and currently sit second in the table. Villa sit 16th in the table and Gerrard has work to do despite having a promising pre-season.
Newcastle 2 vs. 0 Nottingham Forest
The first half of this game was a pretty drab affair but then it picked up it’s pace. Schar scored a screamer in the 58th minute to give Newcastle the lead and Wilson scored in the 78th minute to double that lead. Newcastle sit fifth with the win while Forest sit 18th in the table with work to do.
Tottenham 4 vs. 1 Southampton
Ward-Prowse gave Southampton the lead with a brilliant volley in the 12th minute but that was short-lived. Sessegnon equalised for Tottenham in the 21st minute, and Dier gave Spurs the lead in the 31st minute. Salisu scored an own goal in the 61st minute to make it 3-1 and Kulusevski made it four in the 63rd minute. Tottenham sit top of the league after the first game week while Southampton sit bottom of the table. Great start for Spurs and Southampton already look like they will struggle.
Leeds United 2 vs. 1 Wolverhampton
Podence scored in the 6th minute to give Wolves the lead but Rodrigo equalised for Leeds in the 24th minute. Ait-Nouri scored an own goal in the 74th minute to give Leeds the lead and eventually the three points. Leeds sit seventh in the table with the win while Wolves sit 14th with the loss. A positive start for Jesse Marsch but Wolves will want to bounce back next week.
Leicester 2 vs. 2 Brentford
Castagne scored a brilliant header in the 33rd minute to give Leicester the lead. Dewsbury-Hall scored in the 46th minute to double that lead and give Leicester a proper advantage. Toney got one back for Brentford in the 62nd minute and Dasilva equalised for Brentford in the 86th minute. Brentford sit ninth in the table while Leicester sit eleventh in the table with the point. Not a great start to the season for Leicester and it could get worse if they lose players. Rodgers clearly needs to sell and gain some money to spend. Brentford did brilliantly and will feel encouraged for the week ahead.
Man United 1 vs. 2 Brighton
Gross scored twice in the 30th and 39th minute to give Brighton a 0-2 lead in the first half. The Seagulls were dominant and United showed little influence from ten Hag and played like a team still being coached by Solksjaer. United got one back in the 68th minute thanks to a MacAllister own goal but that was not enough to help the Reds. Brighton sit sixth in the table with the win while United sit 13th in the table with the loss. The first game at Old Trafford and already a first loss of the season.
West Ham 0 vs. 2 Man City
Haaland scored a penalty in the 36th minute and broke the line to score a trademark goal in the 65th minute to give City a comfortable win. The Norwegian dispelled any doubts and the Community Shield miss is long forgotten now. City sit fourth in the table with the win while West Ham sit 19th in the table with work to do in the market.
Bundesliga MW 1
Eintracht Frankfurt lost to Bayern Munich 1-6, Borussia Dortmund beat Leverkusen 1-0, Leipzig drew with Stuttgart 1-1, and Koln beat Schalke 3-1. Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga already clear of the rest and it does look like the departure of Lewandowski will not faze them. Freiburg, Monchengladbach and Koln make up the top four. Dortmund sit seventh in the table while Leipzig sit 10th. The Bundesliga looks like a foregone conclusion already. One has to ask that if Bayern are scoring six when they aren’t even fresh then how many will the score when they are fit?
Ligue 1
Lyon beat Ajaccio 2-1, Monaco beat Strasbourg 1-2, PSG beat Clermond 0-5, Lille beat Auxerre 4-1, and Marseille beat Reims 4-1. PSG are clear on goal difference while, Marseille, Lille and Monpellier make up the top four. Much like the Bundesliga PSG should win Ligue 1 comfortably. Messi and Neymar look particularly hungry and it could be a big season for both of them.
