Community Shield
Liverpool 3 vs. 1 Manchester City
The Community Shield took place on Saturday night as FA Cup winners Liverpool took on Premier League champions Manchester City. Both teams fielded strong sides with Haaland starting for Man City but Nunez was on the bench for Liverpool. Trent scored in the 21st minute to give Liverpool the lead with a brilliant curling effort from outside the box. Liverpool were dominant for much of the game and City looked like a team that had only played two pre-season games.
Alvarez came off the bench to equalise for City in the 70th minute but Ruben Dias handled the ball in the 83rd minute to concede a penalty to Liverpool. Salah stepped up to convert from the spot and restore the reds lead. Nunez had come off the bench in the second half and was causing havoc and he got a goal in the 94th minute via a header to seal the win for his new club.
Nunez celebrated like he had won the league and Klopp has now won every trophy available to him bar the Europa League over seven seasons at Liverpool. City looked tired and leggy but only a fool would jump to conclusions after this game. Haaland missed some point blank chances but in the grand scheme of things it shouldn’t matter. It will be a very interesting season indeed.
Trophée des Champions
Paris Saint Germain 4 vs. 0 Nantes
Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos got a goal each while Neymar scored a double to give PSG a comfortable win over Nantes and get Galtier his first trophy as manager. Castelletto was sent off for Nantes in the 81st minute but apart from that they offered very little to the game. It does look like PSG will be their rampant selves once again but the big question and focus will be the Champions League.
