Group A
Ecuador 1 vs. 2 Senegal
This was a must not lose game for Ecuador and a must win game for Senegal. Sarr gave Senegal the lead in the 44th minute via a penalty but Caicedo equalised for Ecuador in the 67th minute. Koulibaly scored the winner for Senegal in the 70th minute and they saw out the result to progress to the Round of 16. Ecuador played well in this World Cup but they fell short at the final hurdle. They finish third and are sent out of the tournament.
Netherlands 2 vs. 0 Qatar
Gakpo continued his goal per game record by opening the scoring in the 26th minute. Frenkie de Jong got a second in the 49th minute and that was enough for the Netherlands. Netherlands finished top of the group with seven points and progress to the next round as winners. Qatar finish the group stage with zero points but did manage to score a goal at the tournament which was a memorable moment for them.
Group B
Iran 0 vs. 1 USA
Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game in the 38th minute and that was enough to get USA the win and send them into the Round of 16. The previous result seems to have taken a toll on Iran and they just couldn’t bring that intensity to this game. The win against Wales will always be memorable for them. The US head into the next round and that is a massive accomplishment for them.
Wales 0 vs. 3 England
Marcus Rashford scored in the 50th minute and Phil Foden scored in the 51st minute to give England the lead. Rashford added a third and his second in the 68th minute. Wales have a disappointing end to what is arguably their best group of players and some of the elder statesman will probably move on from the national team now. England ease past the group stage and head into the Round of 16 as many predicted.
