Group E
Germany 1 vs. 2 Japan
The first half was a relentless onslaught from Germany and they got the first goal after Japan conceded a penalty. Gundogan covered the penalty in the 33rd minute and Germany looked like they would score more. Japan did well to defend and their goalkeeper Gonda made some stunning saves. Japan rallied in the second half and they began to create chances of their own while defending and pressing from the front. Doan got the equaliser in the 75th minute and the momentum truly shifted in Japan’s favour. Asano then scored the winner in the 83rd minute after driving forward and smashing the ball past Neuer at his front post. Japan held on for the final 10-15 minutes as Germany tried to equalise but the full time whistle blew and Japan had a historic win. Japan fought hard and they will cause problems for the other teams in the group as well. They showed the drive and determination to fight for each ball that some of the bigger teams have lacked in this World Cup. Japan sit second in the group three points clear of Germany while Hansi Flick and co have a must win game against Spain next.
Spain 7 vs. 0 Costa Rica
Spain ran riot over Costa Rica in a comfortable win. Olmo began the scoring in the 11th minute followed by goals from Asensio and Torres in the first half. Torres, Gavi, Soler, and Morata added four in the second half to complete the resounding win. Spain aren’t one of the favourites to win the tournament but that was the most complete performance of the World Cup so far. While the real tests will come in the games ahead, Spain have made a statement that they should not be taken lightly. Gavi and Pedri ran the show in midfield and the attackers all provided goals.
Group F
Morocco 0 vs. 0 Croatia
This game was a drab affair but both keepers pulled off some good saves to keep their cleansheets. It was a better point for Morocco than it was for Croatia and both teams have a point each in the group. This group could go down to the wire given the performances of the teams.
Belgium 1 vs. 0 Canada
Canada dominated Belgium in the first half and should have been clear. Alphonso Davies missed a penalty after Courtois saved it but they should have finished their chances. Batshuayi ran onto a ball over the top of Canada’s defence and he smashed Belgium into the lead in the 44th minute. No other goals were scored and Belgium managed to get three points and go top of the table. Canada will cause problems in their other games but they will need to convert their chances. It was good to see Eden Hazard have a good game.
